Anchoring at Island White

Some of our members shared their concerns about the anchorage at Island White. While navigation charts show the anchorage at Island White as an approved anchorage, the City’s policy has been to only allow anchorage during Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Anchoring other nights during the week are not currently allowed…

At the 08 February 2018 Marine Advisory Commission Meeting, BOA expressed their opinion that the current policy for vessels anchoring overnight at the approved Island White anchorage (Friday Saturday and Sunday nights only) is unfair to boaters, and the previously discussed policy of anchoring any night, up to a maximum of 3 nights, should be implemented. The current regulations do not support the weekend only stay policy and, if necessary, new City regulations should be sought to implement our recommendation.

  1. I would like to add my support to the effort to return Island White anchorage rules to any night up to three consecutive nights. I believe that a number of cruisers making passage north or south through Long Beach would welcome the chance to simply anchor out for a night or two on their way. I believe that this change, along with an improved and well-promoted dinghy landing at Belmont Pier, could generate at least a bit of traffic in local restaurants.

    1. We should not only support the effort we should demand it! If it’s free our governmental officials try to restrict it or take it away from us all together.Albert

  2. Hello all!
My name is Michael OToole, owner of the Gondola Getaway and the Belmont Moorings. I have the buoys out at Island White. We rent them for a $1 a foot for over night or $20 for up to 3 hours, 7 DAYS A WEEK.
I am out there just about every day at some point and see a lot. The basic reason for no anchoring was so we didn’t end up with a derelict fleet of homeless boats. Believe me, I deal with them way to much. It would be a very difficult thing to police if anchoring was not restricted to just the weekends. This is exactly why I spent 10 years getting the permits to put in mooring balls out there. I wanted to service the boating community 7 days a week. I am sure you all can anchor but sometimes others can’t and on a mooring you don’t have to worry about crossing lines or dragging anchors. We all know the wonderful security and simplicity of hooking up to a mooring ball. Your relaxation begins in just one second and you sleep much more soundly! You can even reserve by texting 562-881-0567 with boat name/size/ETA/ETD.
Always call or text that number whenever hooking up to one! it may be reserved. We are out there most the time but PLEASE CALL if we are not so we can give you reservation status. We use an eco mooring system where we drill anchors into the seafloor which gives us better strength and softer pull with our eco-mooring rode. You can see our product featured on Boatmoorings.com Belmont Moorings is the official distributer and installer on the West Coast.

Let me know if you have any questions contacting me at the above phone number.
We are the “convenient” Catalina and we are just a gallon away!

    Happy Boating

    Michael OToole

    1. How are they homeless if there anchored in a federal charted anchorage… What you are about is called encroachment notice the word in the middle is, that is what you have become. Your not going to be able to take over federal property we will fight you all the way…

    2. Your no ot out there every day our public paid personel are patroling that for you and theres documentation of this illegal practice it better stop people can loose their careers over that kind of rico law.. That water does not belong to you or the city… Find somthing better to do that is legal that water is for seafarers not local rip offs.

  3. I researched this and think the city’s action is illegal. I have some materials – including copies of letters to the Coast Guard & Coastal Commission that have been ignored- to pass on. Is there any person/committee working on this? My boat is now in Mexico & my land home is in the San Bernardino mtns.
