Keeping the marinas clean will require a partnership between the boat owners, vendors and marina staff.

We believe that having a clean marina is good for all, so we are asking for your help to keep the marina clean.

The Marine Bureau Recommends that:

Reduce the use of toxic cleaning products. Use non-toxic products for bilge cleaning, holding tank cleaning and boat maintenance

and repair.

Keep it out of the water. Do not allow dust from sanding debris, or liquids from maintenance activities to enter the water.

Use tarps, plastic covers and vacuums to contain any material and dispose of it correctly.

Recycle oil, filters, paint, lead-acid batteries, paper, aluminum, plastic and glass. Use refillable and reusable items whenever possible.

Use absorbent pads and pillows in the bilge to prevent oily bilge water discharge. Prevent oily water leaks in the bilge through

proper engine maintenance.

Dispose of hazardous waste (including used bilge pads) at household hazardous waste collection sites.

Use sewage pump out stations or commercial pump-out services, do not discharge sewage within 3 miles of shore or into

shallow waters, bays, harbors or marinas.

When fueling, do not “top-off”. Use a rag or oil absorbent pad to clean off any fuel spills.

Install fuel/air separators to avoid spills.

Do not dispose of any solid waste at sea. Stow it for proper shore-side disposal.

Line the bottom of the dock box with oil absorbent pads to contain accidental spills.

Don’t keep good ideas for a clean marina to yourself. Let’s share the knowledge and keep the marinas clean.

General Clean Marina Solutions:

Elbow Grease is cheaper! The more caustic a cleaner is, the greater the potential hazard to you and the marina environment.

Use more elbow grease and go easy on the caustic cleaners.

Remember the law. The California Regional Water Quality Control Board, and/or Fish and Game may impose penalties of

up to $5,000.00 per violation for discharge of a hazardous substance into any State waters.

Control runoff contamination. Don’t use the street, or marina parking lots for performing boat, vehicle or any repairs, or projects.

Remember, anything in the parking lots, or on the street go into the storm drain, and then into the marina.

Prevent accidental spills. If you accidentally spill paint or varnish into the water, it must be treated as a hazardous waste spill.

The procedure for reporting the incident is the same as a hazardous waste spill. In the Long Beach Marinas, call 911.

The Marine Safety Division will handle all notifications and contain the spill. Anywhere other than Long Beach, call the

U.S. Coast Guard at (800) 424-8802. Failure to report a spill can result in fines of up to $25,000.00 and/or imprisonment.
